Further out, towards the Tiber are the great baths of Caracella. It is hard to imagine their colossal size in these days of private baths. They are situate on a pleasant slope of a hill & were designed to accommodate all, according to rank, from the Emperor down to the meanest plebeian. Some walls remain almost intact and average about six feet thick & extended to the height of a four storied building of today. They are built of the Roman brick, which is large & thin, about 16 inches & 8 inches x 2 inches. There are many catacombs
