This time Paris was under far more peace-time conditions than on my previous visit. Still the city had been very hard hit by the war and things were far from normal and even on subsequent visits I did not see Paris under conditions approaching peace time, although later the city was gayer and also, by the way, more beautiful, as much of the charm of the city depends upon the foliage of the avenues and gardens which does not make its appearance even in bud till March and April.
