3/-, sugar unobtainable without tickets and sweets non-existant. Bread was rationed and we were not supposed to be able to buy it.
At the headquarters there were many messes and I belonged to the Clerks and Corporals Mess. It was run on proper mess lines in a hired room of a house. We paid our own cook and mess waiter who were drawn as volunteers from the battalions &
