the world, into its doors. The exterior is the facade. The interior is very fine & partly adorned with paintings while most of the arched & domed ceilings are in mosaic. In fact the ceilings & walls are sermons to the understanding. I kissed the toe of St Peter's effigy & visited his tomb & shrine which lies below the floor level of the church & under the great dome. I ascended the dome & almost to the cupola after much labour & enjoyed the a good view of the city & also of the Vatican Palace & Gardens adjoining.
The Vatican is a plain building but is rich in art treasure.
