engine climbing on a third (cog) rail a grade of about 1 in 1 or 45°. Near the summit you change to a proper cable car which ascends at about 1 in 2 & lands you within short walking distance of the crater. We could not see much of the interior of the crater owing to the smoke, steam & fumes & owing to the intense cold of the clouds were glad to leave the loose ashy waste & return to a reasonable altitude.
We returned to the village Vesuvio which is really a distant suburb of
