While at Oisemont, I obtained two days leave to Amiens and went to Paris instead. Even in wartime it was simple to evade the military police at Paris, but after the Armistice they were easy going. The distance down was about 80 miles by train and the fare for soldiers on French railways is half single fair for the return journey. The lines are mainly state and the trains of the "Nord" (or North) are not the fastest or most luxurious, as these lines have seen particularly heavy war service.
