that they have so many trials to go thro' that one longs to spare them, & then I think, who is not my darling [Hermasis?] the best fate?  tho' I selfishly could not think it at the time - I then drew from much more sad I have a child for 12 or 14 years suffering as dear little Richard did with no hope of mental improvement, & only the fear that he would outlive me, & then not be cared for - you see & thinking of you & Bessie, I think of all that is consolatory, & so we do,  & how time has past, & our sorrow is so much softened, that we can see clearly, wh [which] we did not at first - it is useless to try to hasten things you cannot do that -
