My dearest Em
I think before this you must have had poor dear sister Marys letter telling you how very ill she is. I rather prepared you for her being so in my last letter, but I then did not know her state - I could not be satisfied without going [to?] Middle. So George & I went on the 19th April, & staid a week - I immediately saw that she wanted a nurse - her doctors have told her, that the lump she has told you of, which she says was produced by a blow, is certainly cancer & of a kind for which there is no cure - When I saw the place, I found that it had gone quite far without her consulting any one, I felt sure that nothing could be done in the way of cure - She may live on for long, as now there are many palliatives, altho' not cures in her state - however I do not conceal from you dear

Charlie seems better so I hope the [rash?] will come to nothing but I decided yesterday a return of his illness after Julia's death which really was trying & Pitiable to behold. I send a letter just received from Middle
