immense Zig Zag descent at a pace that filled me with discomfort at every turn of the road a wooden shoe for the wheel as drag & there sat our [Vetherine?] - chatting away - seeming to have perfect confidence that his horses would not trip. He was a first rate [Coach?] & a fine honest looking Italian (I like Italy & the Italians) - & had every reason to trust in the sure footsteps of his team - We reached Brieg (in the valley of the Rhone) in safety - The weather had been hot - the snow had melted & every torrent was running apace - consequently the Rhone was in flood & we had to walk some distance while the carriage forded the flood - five men were wading up to their waists to help the horses & wheels - I don't know that the valley interested me very much but it was very pretty. The Rhone is a dirty looking river - we reached Sion where we had to bid our our Vetherine & little Rubens adieu with some regret. Russ took a likeness of the little dog & we reached Martigny by a very straight railroad - There we got into rainy weather - & instead of going at once by the Tête Noire to Chamonix we had to branch off to Vevay where we saw little of the mountains though we walked to Blonay & Hauteville & about the clean little town - & we were very comfortable at Monnet's

many of his fellow executors have been willing to do. Poor Julia [Crozier?] is the only member of the once happy household of cousins I remember. I think poor George often knew what it was to want  Your accounts of Floods & politics are not very cheering dear Wm  I am very sorry you have to bear these troubles alone. We shall all try to spend as little as possible & our wish to see you cheers us on. we cannot but hope that you may come to England as Commissioner next year . [Mrs Haverstone?] would not have half yours [Indecipherable] your Energy on such an occasion so in [Indecipherable] the Colony ought to [Indecipherable]
