The sons of the proprietor of Bigold & Bergmann in Singapore apparently changed their name, Bergmann, to Collier so as to appear wholly English. One of them even enlisted for military service, or had to enlist, and is now said to be fighting in Flanders.
One of August Hüttenbach’s sons is a major in the English service. His father participated in the 1870 campaign and was awarded the Bavarian order of merit for his courage. Whom should we pity more — the weak father or the misguided son? In my opinion, the father should take all the blame because he failed to instil a sense of national identity, of national pride, in his son. Of course, the Jews tend to be somewhat cosmopolitan, but that should not be an excuse. I suppose there will be many other similar cases.
