10.6.16. On June 5 we had the first news of a major naval battle that raged from 3pm on May 31 to the morning of June 1 near Jutland at Korns Reef between almost the entire English and German high-sea fleets. The first dispatch from the English Grand Admiral Jellicoe sounds rather glum and talks of large English losses. In the ensuing telegrams, after the first shock in England had subsided, the mood seemed to become more optimistic, until now, in the newspapers, it has become a great English victory. Our enemies admit to having lost:

Battlecruisers:

Queen Mary

27,000 tonnes

Indefatigable

18,750 “

Invincible

17,250 “

Armoured cruisers:

Defence

14,600 “

Black Prince

13,550 “

Warrior 13,5 50 “

Total 104,700 tonnes
Plus 8 torpedo boats
Whereas we lost:
Battleships [indeciph.] 18,600 tonnes

Pommern 13,0 40 “
