Thus sang Theodor Storm [well-known German poet], and thus I felt myself when I first
saw her aboard the “Bayern” in Singapore. Oh my wife! May God protect you and our children, and may we see each other again in a not so distant future. My life would be empty without you. There will, there must be a reunion soon, and then hopefully never again another lengthy separation in our lives; there need to be nothing but happy, carefree years after the many sad ones before.
I’ve recently been perusing Storm’s work and in his novel “Im Schloss” [In the Castle] I happened upon this line, spoken by the uncle: “Love is nothing but the fear of mortal man to be alone.”
I cannot imagine that Storm, whose novels express so much warmth and love between humans, could have meant this line seriously. On the contrary, real love lasts beyond death! Love has absolutely nothing to do with egoism, and if man loved only to avoid being alone, it would be the basest form of egoism
