So for the time being we had to make do with the two smaller reservoirs. Water was rationed and each of us received half a washbasin of it in the morning to wash ourselves and brush our teeth. The reservoir within the compound has now also been empty for 4 days and so we dug holes for groundwater fairly near the camp, but that water is muddy, yellow and foul-smelling and tasting. We promptly had a few cases of mild dysentery. Despite an appeal by the committee, the authorities have not yet gotten down to any kind of water treatment, they are probably waiting for us to do it and pay for it. So once the last basin is empty and they start using the foul water in the kitchen, our health will surely deteriorate rapidly. The fresh water from the reservoir had been used to rinse out the lavatories, which are located in a separate building and drain into the ocean.
