According to earlier estimates by economists, such a war like this one could have been financed no longer than half a year, at most. This shows how wrong these experts can be, and since we are still financially alive to this day, I can see no reason why we should not be able to continue. Because of the blockade surrounding Germany we cannot import much of anything and are pretty much self-sufficient; so as long as the nation has confidence in the government and in itself, money will keep its value no matter how
much they print.
An English banker, Sir Edward Holden, has put several questions about Germany’s
finances to Treasury secretary Dr. Helfferich, which is rather peculiar. I do not
understand why, during a war, one should even discuss anything with the enemy. I mean it seems obvious that one would only ask such questions in order to receive information that was hitherto missing. We are just always too decent, too candid!
