negotiations with the Commander. It consisted of 10 men, chaired by Mr Plate and including Suhl, but Eaton refused to deal with this committee and said he wanted just the
one committee. I had expected that much and thought for myself that this was the
perfect moment for our committee to step down and to propose that a new permanent
camp committee be elected from the strike committee. The general meeting actually agreed to this and so we resigned from office after just 14 days with a sigh of relief. I had already wanted to step down when they insisted on sending off the letter to the consul, but my fellow committeemen at the time did not agree. I’m very glad, and so are the others now, that we are rid of this burden, all the more so as I was quite disappointed by the lack of support from the Singapore people, above all. The new committee consists of Plate, Lobeck, Matthiessen, Lorenz, Heiniger and Schaffganz and has been accepted by the Commander. Plate chiefly does the negotiating but he, too, doesn’t seem to
