Among the Colombo crowd are several crew members of the “Emden”, including Lieutenant-Colonel Gerdes. He recently talked at length about the voyages of the “Emden” and her battle with the “Sydney”. The first shot fired by the “Emden” hit the control tower but failed to explode, blasting just the [distance?] gauge. Had it not been for this mishap, it could have well been the “Sydney”, not the “Emden”, to kick the bucket. — After the first encounter the Emden disappeared to track down potential [Collier?] but returned after a few hours and resumed firing at the defenceless victim, because the flag was still up. The halyard had got tangled and it took a lot of work and effort to get the flag down.
