There are no barracks, just tents, and one has to sleep on the ground. As usual, food is delivered uncooked and everybody has to cook for himself. Newspapers, tobacco or other things from the canteen are not available. B. protested immediately whereupon an officer came and remedied the situation. — This is the result of all of B.’s efforts regarding the camp. It’s always the same: It’s all the thanks you get.
Along with B. there was a certain Paul Armbruster in Sing Sing, brought there because of repeated attempts to flee. The poor guy wasn’t quite right in the head and suffered from a compulsion to flee. He was otherwise absolutely innocuous and of no danger to anybody, so his mates in Sing Sing repeatedly warned the guards not to shoot if he tried to abscond again. On April 30,
