As a result of the many brawls in camp, eventually a counter-movement emerged, the so-called “White Hand”, made up mostly of men from the [indecipherable] and the Emden. The frustration of the majority in camp eventually became too much to bear and resulted in the White Hand hunting down the main perpetrators of the Black Hand, such as Steinhorn, Georgi, Portmann, Babst and Rabe. They were herded together, overpowered, beaten up and eventually simply thrown over the barbed wire. Portmann died of the wounds he sustained, while the others were carted off to hospital with various injuries and a few broken bones. The Major kept his soldiers away from camp, watched the whole spectacle smiling coldly and even had it photographed. The next day he rounded up the camp committee consisting of Frankfurter, Schroeder and 3 others, as well as Burkard, and threw them into Sing Sing. All of them
