Cox had caused a lot of problems for the German government as he could not contain his hatred of Germans. The moment war broke out, he began to preach publicly against the Germans and to incite the natives to mutiny. The Germans who lived near New Mecklenburg became very nervous, of course, fearing disputes with the natives, and a physician, Dr [Brannert?], decided to give the crafty missionary a decent thrashing. In October 1914, after the English occupation, the doctor put his plan into action in Namatanai while 4 gentlemen – Hornung, Köster, Philipps and a Belgian – kept watch nearby to stave off any undue intervention. The Rev. copped an extraordinary hiding and sought revenge, of course.
