It’s clear from the comparison how much better the treatment is in Germany, and none of the smear campaigns published in the Australian papers will change that fact. And as with Ruhleben, so it will be with all the other ignominies and brutalities they ascribe to the German nation. A German is generally far too good-natured to commit atrocities. Of course there are always exceptions, as in any other nation, but far less so than elsewhere.
It seems that as one of the consequences of the strike here, Commander Lt. Eaton has been removed and summoned to the front. He has been replaced by Lt. Redford, who is older and seems more quiet, if not almost lethargic. He was a mining engineer before the war and also served in the F.M.S. for a while. The deputy commander, Lt. Ford, has also disappeared. I’m sure he has feathered his nest with a few extra commissions in the canteen and could afford to quit the military service.
