means that the profits made benefit the whole camp. It also means we can subsidise the canteen to achieve better quality and quantity of food. A fisherman who lives nearby
also supplies us fairly regularly with fish now, which makes for welcome variety.
In the meantime, the barracks for the Hong Kong people have been finished. The canteen has been moved into a separate building in front of the gate, where before the tents of the Australian officers stood. The Commander has built himself a little house on the
slope of the hill facing Trial Bay. Nearby new barracks were built for the soldiers so that now only 1 sergeant resides in the rooms around the gate, who is in charge of the keys. The rooms once occupied by the canteen now house more people from Hong Kong and some newer arrivals. We now number more than 500 men in camp, including the reserve officers.
