14/11/1915. Business sense seems to slowly get hold of many here. Many are running out of money and you can’t really blame them for wanting to earn something. Three young men from the Straits have opened a laundromat, “Edelweiss”, and 2 others have begun a dish and cutlery-cleaning service, “Spick and Span”. Both enterprises are welcome since not everybody has the inclination and ability to do these necessary chores. The prices are modest but presumably still leave a small profit to the entrepreneurs.
On the beach and in the hallway little cafeterias have opened that offer cocoa, coffee and cake. The prices are quite high: 3d = 24 for a small cup of coffee and 4d = 32 for a cup of cocoa. These entrepreneurs are said to have made quite a bundle in a very short time, and there is quite a bit of resentment.
