reacts to our complaints. The vice-consul did not let on at all during his visit. But he was obviously informed about everything even before his arrival and might have stalled his visit on purpose so that the 14-day lock-up would run its course. The mood in camp had suffered badly due to the withdrawal of many pleasant extras such as tobacco, beverages, butter, etc and the holding back of letters plus the ban on writing any, and most would have realised their mistake. Once and never again is what many think. We were now escorted to the beach by guards and allowed just ½ hour for swimming, and anybody stepping beyond a staked-out area of the beach could be shot at, which nearly happened to the fat Wehrs. Lt. Ford supervised these beach trips and greatly revelled in his role as commander. – It all was hardly enjoyable and the harmony in camp has definitely suffered. There were also allegations of whistle-blowing against 4 men, who were temporarily excluded from the meetings.
