because the next day Lt. Eaton complimented us on his behalf. The American consul checked out everything very thoroughly and made copious notes for his report, and also took note of various complaints, all to do with our release. The report should come out quite favourable for the Australian government now that we have equipped and furnished the camp with our labour and our money. He didn’t witness the empty quarters we found upon our arrival and will not report them to Washington.
Suhl the younger, as former Austrian consul in Penang, may yet get a chance to get out
of here; I’d be pleased for him.
Unfortunately, our hotel has filled up in the meantime. There are now almost 250 of us and another 40-50 are expected soon, and the overall number is meant to reach eventually 400.
