first visit here he was quite piqued by Gerbrecht, probably because the latter so vocally complained to the American consul in front of the Major and the Colonel, mainly about the still-missing Ceylon funds. A fortnight ago the Major visited again and demanded that Gerbrecht stand down from the committee, and if he didn’t behave, he’d be transferred back to Liverpool. He [the Major] didn’t have the guts to tell G. himself, but made Lt. Eaton tell him after his departure. As a result, not just G. but the whole committee wanted to stand down and it took a lot of convincing from our side to prevent this move. It wouldn’t have impressed the Major in the slightest, but it would have harmed G. and we would have had to elect a new committee, with dubious results.
