One piece of news that greatly distressed me, the death of dear Uncle Ernst, on
27/11/1915, also did not reach me for many months. I deeply regret that I won’t see him again, because we 5 siblings held him in great esteem. A Singapore acquaintance who once met him in Hamburg in my presence called him the very archetype of a venerable Hamburg gentleman and by God, he was. It’s a pity that his family, who has resided in Hamburg for centuries, is now left without a direct male descendant. I would like to add his family name, Winthern, to mine in future, if that’s possible. We should not consign family traditions to the past, but try to keep them alive for future generations. — Now our dear Aunt Hanna is the only one left in Hamburg of the previous generation! May God grant her a long life so that I can see her again upon my return. When I think of this reunion, I feel as if I’m about to see my dear old mother again, even if she has been dead for years. The two sisters so resemble each other in their character, their feminine wisdom and kindness, that our love for Hanna is almost as strong as that for our mother.
