just as well as there. We thus also have a hearty appetite and our cook, Mr Reichenbach, who used to work for deputy governor Wilkinson in Singapore, does his best to satisfy us. For breakfast we have just coffee and bread but treat ourselves to a warm meal at lunchtime and sometimes for dinner as well.
Contrary to our expectations newspapers are still not allowed so that we are even more in the dark about world affairs than in Liverpool.
Apart from the orderlies (Germans) that were brought along for the cleaning of the lavatories and similar jobs, the government requires 30 men each day to go and get firewood for the kitchen in the nearby bush. The pay, as in Liverpool, is 1/.- a day. The woodcutters depart at 8am and return at noon. The interest is pretty big, especially from the Colombo gentlemen, who are in dire straits because they have still not received the money they transferred from Ceylon.
