with the Commander, so that we finally can have some peace again in camp. Unfortunately, a few days after strike action began, on Feb. 2, we had some more
arrivals, 95 men from Hong Kong and elsewhere. They had to settle into the hall for the
time being because as a result of the strike, the barracks that had been planned for them, were not completed. The poor sods have to sleep on the cold granite floors of the hall. We tried to help them out a bit with blankets, etc, but truth be told, they’re the
ones that suffer most from the strike. They have loyally sided with the camp even though none of it really concerns them. Hopefully they turn out to be agreeable people once we get to know them better. They definitely make a better impression than the people from Colombo.
Almost simultaneously with our strike, soldiers in the military camp in Liverpool began to strike. Thousands have deserted the camp when additional drill was imposed, and have stormed the trains to Sydney without paying the fare. In Sydney they ransacked tobacco, fruit and delicatessen shops, and peppered the German Club
