in the Blue Mountains. Their quarters are, like here in Trial Bay, in a former prison, although a smaller one than ours, and apparently without a mess. But the parole is even less restrictive than here.

20.10.1915. We now have plenty of time and quiet to be able to read in peace. The consistently nice and warm weather allows us to lie down in the sand or on the grass and to immerse ourselves into a good book without being bothered by anyone. The library that we brought along from Singapore is thus of great service to us and all the comrades. With fresh interest I have read again Bertha von Suttner’s “Lay down your arms”, which also tells of war and its consequences and the harsh strokes of fate. The basic idea of the book is disarmament and thus prevention of future wars. Will that ever be achieved? As long as the world exists, so will envy and resentment and hatred, both between individuals and between nations; and as horribly as wars interfere with personal and family lives, as inevitable they are nonetheless
