no doubt highly educated people and yet their sermons could not have been more different. Steck is an out and out theorist and his sermons never really touch your heart the way Dr Pothmann’s do. I have enjoyed listening to the latter and always walked away feeling at peace and edified.

On August 13, the socialist Dr Cohn’s address to the Reichstag was partly reported in New York [the following was quoted in English by the diarist]: “Dr Cohn sais he recognises that Germany is honestly trying to treat POWs as she would wish German prisoners abroad to be treated. This must be faithfully carried out. The interning of English civilians for political reasons was unwise, and it was unendurable that the wives and children of interned prisoners were not allowed to see their husbands and fathers. It was barbarous to throw such children from schools. Each one was a monument to Germany’s barbarous method of warfare. Dr Cohn believes that reports of the persecution of Germans in England are exaggerated and partly invented by the press to rouse a spirit of hatred against England.”
