My dear Father
I hope you have lost the Hay Fever. I am going to the Rural camp on the 16th in. The Government are going to suply tents blankets and water proof sheeting. Geofry is not old enough to be allowed to go. Last Saturday the troop went out to Sea Forth in the afternoon to be inspected by SSM Valentine. In the morning the first engineers and my self went out to build a bridge for the inspection.A boy was going to bring my tomahalk out in the afternoon so when I got out there I found that the ropes for the bridge had been left behind and they only had a small tommy axe which would not stay on the handle unless the handle was upside down. We cut 3 saplings about 8 feet long and 3 inches in diameter and laid them about 1 foot apar accross the stream, then we cut about 40 saplings 3 fee in long 2 in in diameter and laid them accross the 3 poles then we fill up the spaces between the logs with dead leaves and then put 2 inches of wet sand over the top of that. Wen we had finished we found it was a little shaky in the centre so three of us took off our boots and socks and put 2 forked sticks under it and then a lot of us could get on it at once and it was quite firm of course S.S.M. Valentine did not come but the engineers had their photo taken on the bridge
