[Saturday 25 March]

We have been following the rivers Yvonne, Rhone & Seine all day.

Keeping the Seine & Rhone on our right we passed through Sens & Melun & our hearts beat high with the expectation of passing through Paris but our hopes were dashed to the ground at Juvisy where we struck of on to the line to Calais in reaching there we passed through Verseille [Versailles] St Germain en lave [Saint- Germain-en-Laye?], Nantes & Vernon. At Nantes we caught the only glimpse of Paris we were destined to get, the Eifel [Eiffel] Tower soaring up into the evening sky ten miles away, shortly after that it grew too dark to see anything.

The scenery to day has again been magnificent. The chateuxs [chateaus], bridges & aquaducts along the banks of the Seine together with the beautiful churches we have passed in the towns held our attention all the time. As we go further North, so the cold increases & we are beginning to feel it a good deal.
