[Tuesday 27 June]

I left off trying to go to sleep but lo & behold before I had been in bed ten minutes our guns burst out into one deafening roar. It was our artillerys farewell to Fritz as they move out tomorrow.

We could not hear ourselves speak for the thunder of our guns   The Germans evidently alarmed started to bombard our second line with heavy shrapnel. I am sick of comparing bombardments, but this one was awful. Our dugout heaved & shook, we were expecting every moment to be our last though we didn't seem to show it. We talked & smoked as if everything was right. We have stood so many that we take them as a matter of course now. After over half an hour things gradually quietened down. That made 5 bombardments in 2 ½ hours & yet when it was all over I slept like a top. The rest of the day was quiet.
