My 22nd birthday. The only birthday present I got was orders to move up to the trenches.

We left Warloy-Baillon at 7.15 P.M., we marched through Senlis [Senlis-le-Sec] & Bouzincourt. It was here that we first came level with our heavy guns (15 inch) giving Fritz a rough passage. We carried on & marched on towards the gaunt ruined tower of Albert whose shattered skeleton was pitifully illuminated by the sheets of flame from the 12 inch howitzers near its base.

We marched on & eventually slept out in the open in our overcoats, by jove it was cold.

The cannonade was terrific  all night, this is a nice place we are being pushed into, I don't think
