[Thursday 6] 7 Vendredi [Friday] [April]
Today we start up towards the trenches to take our gruel. At last we are to face the great guns that we have heard muttering & grumbling in the distance for the past two weeks. Soon we will take a hand in the real struggle for victory.
Today has been a hard one. A march of 19 miles with full pack. Luckily it was a cool day & the march was a very interesting one. It lead us from Boesinghem [Boeseghem] through Steenbecque & Morbecque to the city of Hazebrouck which took 15 minutes to march through. After that we passed through the villages of [Pradele?], Strazeele, Merris & Outersteene. We pushed through outersteene & were billited between it & the town of Bailleul, which I visited as soon as we got our packs off.
At Morbeque we were reviewed at 10 AM. by Genl Joffre. He is a rather short fat man with a heavy white moustache.
