[Sunday 9 April]

Slept sound & long, got up at about 8 A.M.

Stayed round the billet in the morning & was sent up to H.Q. with a dispatch. In the afternoon we were suddenly told to get 12 men ready to go up to the trenches at 6.30.P.M. I was told off as one, but poor old Mac had to stop behind.

Our nerves were a bit on edge as we did not know what sort of a reception we would get going in. As it turned out we missed the shrapnel & except for a few stray bullets we had nothing to trouble us.

Our journey led us through Erquinghem along the Armentiers [Armentieres] road to the ruined village of Bois Greniers [Bois Grenier], here we found every house shattered by shell fire & the church with only a ruined bit of tower standing we took our gear off the waggons here & put them on a truck, this we pushed down a mile long tramline, after this we carried them  ¼ mile to our position.
