Raid 1st Divn.
[Monday 12 June]
A very wet unpleasant day. I received 4 letters, the first for a fortnight.
We can hear a sustained roar of rifles to the North, probably up towards Ypres. It sounds just like sea waves beating on a shore punctuated by dull heavy explosions which we know to be shells
Another rotton [rotten] night tonight. The first division are making a raid and as usual we have to bear the brunt of the artillery to draw the enemy's attention away from them.
The fireworks started at about 10 to 12 midnight & lasted for half an hour.
3 of us had to sit it out in the trench & we were nearly deafened & blinded by the shells that came closest. As usual our particular little spot had particular attention, They always pick us out. Fortunately none of us were hurt. We got back to bed at about 1 p.m.
