[Tuesday 20 June]
Plenty of strafe today. We didn't get up till about midday for breakfast.
It was a nasty night. Bursts of strafe off & on right through the night. I went to sleep at 2AM & refused to move until they started lobbing them on top of me. I have faint recollections of feeling the dugout rock & hearing dull explosions in intervals of semi wakefulness but I pulled the blanket round my ears & kept on sleeping. A bombardment at night is a fearsome thing. The whole sky seems aflame with a baleful light. It fair gives you the jip even when you know its not going to come your way. They take a lot of getting used to.
This afternoon a shell hit our billet killing four & wounding 8. Mac is O.K. & nobody from No 1 sec was hit. They were mostly new chaps, just joined up having a lesson on the guns.
