[Saturday 18 March]
We have 2300 troops on board, our transport is the H.I.
I was on guard last night. We ran into a storm, just my stiff luck. We had to sleep on the unsheltered deck & it came on to rain at about 2 A.M, to make matters worse the sea began to get up till 4 A.M we were shipping solid sheets of water over the bows. We were wet through in no time & continued to get a soaking every two or three minutes till we decided to dismount the gun at about 5.30. We gave it up as a bad job at 6 A.M & went below. My bedding I left floating about in the bows & have been letting my clothing dry on me all day & am hoping to escape a cold.
The rough weather has put ¾ of the men out of the running but I am keeping my record up & am quite well. They put the finishing touches on our discomfort by inoculating us this afternoon.
