[Tuesday 11 April]
Rainy & mucky today. Early in the morning I went out over the parapet to have a shot at a couple of hares which were playing about in front of our post. I got a couple of shots but got nothing except mud over my ankles but that didn't matter as we are all wearing big rubber thigh boots which are a great godsend as they are warm and dry.
We have to go for our water along about 300 yds of road which is swept by a machine gun & on our way pass all that is left of a small cottage in which is a great life sized Crucifix. The cottage has been leveled with the ground by countless shells & only the part of the wall where the crucifix hangs is left & there is not a scratch on it though on one side the wall has been carried away within an inch of the cross.
