[Saturday 29 July]
We are back with the limbers right amongst hundreds of guns, the main force of the British artillery in this sector. They are constantly in action & the very ground seems to wriggle under the terrible concussion, yet we can sleep under it as peacefully as if we were at home.
During the evening & night we were pulled out of our beds twice for gas alarm but nothing came along so we went back to bed. After that Fritz must have shelled us as he wounded a horse tied to one of the limbers & it had to be destroyed the next day. I was so sound asleep that I knew nothing about it till the morning so you may guess the dangers that beset you here even in your sleep, but we take the risk with a good heart & an open chance so what more could one wish for?
