We get relieved today at 10 A.M. Mac & I had a trip back towards the reserve but we got lost in the ruined saps. We had to take a jar of rum back to the other half of our section but after being lost for an hour or so & being almost caught by shrapnel, we just dived into a dugout in time, we decided the best course was to get back to our guns while our luck was good, & we did.
Just before we were relieved the Germans tried to retake the bit of trench we had taken by bombing They took our men by surprise & things looked very wobbly for a while, I expected to have Fritz coming round the trench into my back any minuit but with the help of our Stokes mortar battery & a 17th Batt Lewis gun we got it back
Coming back I was missed by inches with a couple of shrapnels, for the second time in the morning. They seemed to have me set. But I got back to the limbers O.K. at midday.
At night the 2nd charged as a division but were cut up- nuff said. They got into our own artillery fire in some places & in others found the barbed wire not cut.
