[Saturday 5 August]
At about 1:30 A.M. I left to go to the rear Through over a mile of sap & open to our reserves. Fritz was shelling the lot furiously I ran most of the way execting to be blown out any minuit, owing to my over-wrought nerves. He nearly got me once or twice, which did not tend to calm me down any, especially as he had a perfect enfilade on the sap which I was going through.
I eventually arrived at our reserve guns near Contalmaison & had my hand dressed at a dressing station. I also got a drink of coffee which tasted heavenly. From there I walked back to the ambulances in Sausage gully, near our limbers, after that I went to a dressing station in La Boiselle [Ovillers-la-Boisselle] wood & was taken to another place where I was inoculated.
I got into a motor there & was taken to [Porchville?] [Porcheville?]. There we were put into a train & sent to No 11 Genl. Hosp. at Camiers, near Etaples, where I arrived about 7.30 PM & had a bath. I was travelling for 20 hours after being hit & felt just about done & was not sorry to get into a soft bed & clean sheets.
