[Sunday 4 June]

Did 2 hours guard from 1 till 3 A.M & then we had to stand to till about 4 A.M. So we had no tucker I had to start right away on the mile walk to white city & back for rations. We had porridge for breakfast [indecipherable] ration & bacon for dinner & steak & chips for tea.

During the afternoon they shelled both sides & around us very heavily with big shell & sent some 77 mjm [?] high Explosive round our parapets for luck.

I had jusy got to bed when I was called up to go on fatigue to White city & carry a big Machine Gun loophole back, this lasted from 9 pm till 11.20. No sooner had I got back than a very heavy artillery fire opened on our right accompanied by showers of flares & machine gun fire. The night was pitch dark with not a sound from the trenches opposite us. It was very weird standing to not knowing what to expect however they cooled down at about 2 A.M & I got an hours sleep till stand to at 3.30.
