[Friday 24 March]

Passing through the delightful scenery we came shortly after daylight to a fine river which we followed a couple of hours & came to Lyons [Lyon] at 7.30. It was greatly admired by us all with the two great rivers, spanned by numberless fine bridges, flowing right through the centre of the city. We stopped for about an hour & then continued our journey through fertile fields, past stately chateux [chateau] & old world villages, some nestling under the shoulders of majestic mountains while the roofs & spires of others peeped demurely through the wealth of lofty poplars & budding small growth that seemed to hold them in their scented embrace.

Talk about the women of France (Not half) anyhow, to cut a long story short, they have quite won our hearts, as we appear to have won theirs. They shower kisses on us from window & doorstep, & intermingle them with more substancial things such as chocolates & fruit. This land is rightly called La Belle France. I am beginning to love it.
