[Saturday 3 June]

We go into the trenches today for 12 days. We left the farm at 1.30 P.M amidst the sorrowful farewells of the French people who didn't want us to go & arrived at the trenches at about 4 P.M. we are No 4 position which covers the Salient. Things are pretty quiet just here but round about us the whizz bangs and boinks have been floating about some.

I have taken of on the job of cooking. We found everything upside down but I managed to get things straight & give them pancakes for tea.

We fired the gun over the parapet & made the sparks fly off Fritz's barbed wire. I have also done a bit of sniping. You have to snipe over the top, no loopholes here & the trenches are only 300 yds apart. At night there are two men on at a time & at least one must have his head up all the time.
