Mai [May]

31st Mercredi [Wednesday 31st]

Went to sleep listening to Fritzes guns & was wakened up by our own 4.7's bidding them good morning.

The Morning was comparatively quiet but and I went into Erquinghem on leave in the afternoon.

While I was away the [indecipherable] every thing round the billet- though the nearest one was a good 150 yds away. We passed along the road about half an hour after they had finished & found nothing but shell holes frightened Frenchwomen & fallen trees. Personally I wasn't at all sorry that they had finished off before I got to that bit of the road. It was only a respite however, as they opened up again very shortly & once more we went to sleep to the sound of German shells. That is 3 hour-bombardments in one day. We had one in the morning, & all the shells unpleasantly close to us.
