[Monday 31 July]
So far our company has had only 11 casualties only one being killed. We move up into supports. Just before we left Fritz put over about 8 bursts of 5.9' coal box shrapnel. He didn't do much good except to frighten some horses, though the men had some marvellous escapes. We moved off at 1.30 P.M & arrived at reserves at 2.pm
It is safer here than where we came from even though it is closer to the front line. I have been asked to be cook & am taking the job on for the two days we are here.
We were watching our big guns giving Fritz merry [indecipherable] this evening, big [humps?] & thick, it certainly was some bombardment. They completely blotted out a patch of ground about a mile long & 500 yds deep, you could not see the place for smoke & debris I wouldn't be a German for quids
