to the northward of him quite Clear of Ice his Compass he said was very unsteady often pointing to the northward from the North the way [indecipherable] or passage between the main of Spitsbergen & the NE Island has generaly a stream of wind blowing through it which will put a ship past almost all her sails while another lying not a mile from her under either of the Headlands will be quite becalm'd in the Lat of 75 they said that Ice was always met with the fairway between Spitzbergen & Groenland which they imagind ran off like a point from the shore & probably markd the outlet of some fresh river off the extreme point of this Sea they had Soundings from 80 to 100 fathoms.
