March 1773 - Rotterdam

ill made fly before he has touched the hook.  I prevericated the gentleman seemd to feel more pain than I ever did in the loss of a trout that I had raisd & should have caught had not my fly been too clumsy to deceive him.

After dinner we were conducted with great gracity to the Society of Literature lately Establishd at this place   here we were receivd with great form & told that we had been proposd & should have the honour of being made members of it an honour which we gratefully accepted as it is right for travelers to be of many societies.

The founder of this august body who is still alive confind the studies of its members to Hydrostaticks for a certain term of years as yet not near elaps'd so that machines alone could be the subject of our conversation several new ones were shown none of which had been tried & all provd equaly above my comprehension it
